That is the mountains of information that are readily available online; this knowledge serves as a double edged sword because on one hand, we can learn a lot via the internet. 

On the other hand, it floods our brain with too much data and this causes us to feel overwhelmed.


In this article, I will talk about how you can start your journey in blogging and eventually make a decent living out of this activity.

Blogging has been around since the boom of the internet; in fact, the earliest blog recognised was created by Justin Halls in the year 1944 which he referred to as his personal home page.

But you will be surprised to know that the term “blogging” only took its form in the year 1997 where the term weblog was created by Peter Merholz who subsequently broke up the phrase in to “we blog” in the side bar of his blog.


You must be thinking now, how did this personal activity of charting out our journal lead to monetisation?

Well, the process is quite interesting: those who first started blogging did not have the intention of making money through their blogs, however, as their readership increased, the number of sponsorship also increased.

Not to mention, there are a number of ways for blog owners to integrate sponsored ads into their blogs.

So this is a short introduction of blogging to get you started, now let us move on to the more interesting stuff, how you can do it as well!

Who Is Suitable For Blogging

Have you ever wondered if you are suitable for blogging? Or should you blog even if you are running a traditional business? Well, based on my experience, your intentions and expectations must be clear before you start blogging.

Consider this, many of us start out the journey with the intentions to make money while blogging and we expect it to be a smooth ride; I mean, how can it be difficult? It is just writing…

Well, if we start off this way, we might not last; blogging is a marathon not a sprint.


Yes, you can always have that intention of monetising your blog but you should also look at the bigger picture of building your readership.

Frankly speaking, if you ask me, who is suitable for blogging? My short answer is everyone because we all have the ability to build our following – not everyone will like us likewise not everyone will hate us.

The Number 1 Mistake To Avoid When Starting Off

Okay, I will be honest here, there are many other mistakes that you want to avoid when starting off this epic journey. BUT in my opinion, there is one mistake that you must avoid at all costs, and no, it is not about getting your personal domain.

Instead, we must avoid being trapped in the world of vacuum surrounded by all of our awesome ideas; these ideas can be the topics that you want to write about to the design of the blog. Sometimes, people get struck at selecting a logo! Find out more about the other mistakes that you can avoid when starting your blog.


Trust me, there will be a million items on your list when you want to start and that will overwhelm even the most hardworking individuals around.

What Can You Do?

The solution is simple really… prioritise your tasks!

Start with the big rocks then the small gravel followed by sand finally water... If you do not start with the big rocks, you will never get everything in...

Now that you know the solution to the problem, it is time to take action! In the next section, you will learn 5 practical steps to get you started.

5 Practical Steps To Start Making Money Off Your Blog

Before we start talking about the 5 practical steps that can help you get started, I want to give you a brief introduction about the system.

This system revolves around the principle of duplication which means we study what successful blogs are doing that are giving them results.

Trust me these 5 steps can give you a fast start in your blogging journey.

The Steps...

Yup, the first step is to layout your plan. Honestly, this is the fundamental step that most people screw up, either they spend too much time planning or they fail to plan.

Let’s take a look at both scenarios, if we spend too much time planning, we will commit the greatest mistake which is not taking action.

On the other hand, if we fail to plan, we are already planning to fail from the start. So how do we work around this? Well, my take to planning is to look at the bigger picture first then you can work out the smaller steps to get there.

I have come up with a few pointers that can help you with planning:

  • What are the niches or topics that you want to blog on? Check out the top 7 niches that you can start with today.
  • Do you have any skills or experience that you can share your knowledge with the rest of the world?
  • Do you have interests that you wish to pick up and do not mind sharing your journey with the society?

Of course, these are just the questions that will help you set the overall theme of your blog. There are other things that you have to consider too such as the design, logo and frequency that you will update your blog.

That said, my advice is to go with a simple design and logo first; you do not need a beautiful layout or design for the start. To me what is the point of having a beautiful looking blog when no one ever sees it?

Instead I will work on delivering quality content, so plan your timetable, how frequent do you want to blog?

The time spend in this step should not exceed 24 hours. In fact, if you set your mind to it, you can easily do it within 1 hour.

Now that is out of the way, let’s set up your blog.

In my opinion, this is the easiest step because all you need to do is to think of your domain name and set up your hosting account.

Choose Your Blog Name
For your blog identity, you can use your own personal name or a name that is related to your blog topic.

A word of caution, do not spend days thinking of the best name instead shortlist a few names and go with the one that makes the most sense to you right now.

Once you have selected your name, you will need to purchase it so that it is yours to keep! There are many domain registrars around but the one that I recommend and use is namecheap.

Get Your Hosting Account

After you are done with purchasing your domain name, what you will need now is your own hosting account in order to bring your blog to live!

And no, I am not biased here, I had used another hosting service where customer support is terrible. Being someone who know nuts about coding, a good customer support can help me solve a lot of issues that I could not solve alone.

Final Setup – WordPress & Design

The final setup is to integrate wordpress into your blog. If you are following my guide so far, all you need is to follow this guide to set up the integration process.

You may be wondering now, why wordpress?

Well, the answer is simple really, it is free and offers you flexibility in the design. Not to mention, it is user friendly; all you need to do is type out your content and it will be there.

Speaking of design, my number one recommendation is to use elementor with generatepress.

Simply because of the ease of use which means you can design a beautiful website even if you have no coding experience. Furthermore, the light server load allows your website to load faster for your visitors.

Of course, there are a million themes and plugins out there in the market place, but why specifically these two, why not the rest?

The short answer that I have for you is I use them myself and it is amazingly easy to use; in fact, this website is build using the following set up.

If you have decided to use elementor and generatepress, I have included two simple walkthrough of how you can plug it into your wordpress system.

The final section of integrating wordpress and setting up the theme and plugin should not take more than 30 minutes.

One last thing, I know that there are a lot of plugins that you can add to your newly created blog but for this fast start setup, we want to keep it simple and get the party started.

Finally, you have come to the “difficult” part – delivering quality content!

Well, it is not really difficult if you chose a topic that you have interest in or already had some prior experience.

So how do you get started? The usual advice that most people will give you is to start writing, just write.

Research On Search Volume
For me, I prefer to reverse engineer my writing. Instead of writing blindly or just start writing when I have inspiration, I will head to the keyword planner tool (yes, this is free), to do a simple research on what people are searching for in my topic.

This will give me an idea of the subtopics that I can start with because ultimately what we all want is to monetise our blogs. But how can we monetise it if all the content that we written have an average of 0 searches?

Structure Your Posts

After you have done your keyword research, the next step is to structure your posts.

What do I mean by that?

Rather than, writing the article as ideas pop up in your head, work out the table of contents first, from there, work out what are the things that you want to talk about in each section. Finally, start writing!

Final Edit

Did you noticed that I did not mention about adding images or videos to the article? That is because I wanted you to focus on writing!

In the final edit, what you want to do is to look for images to add to your blog and check for spelling or grammatical errors.

However, please don’t be a perfectionist because you will never get your content posted. Think about this, the best selling book 4-hours work week had many grammar errors that were only ratified in the edited version.

So long story short, just do it!

Alright! You have made it to the exciting part in your blogging journey that is promotion!

Just imagine if you do not do any promotion will you get any exposure?

The answer: Yes!

Although, monetisation is your ultimate goal, we should not think about it all the time.

Focus on delivering quality content and promoting the content.

You will never know when it will happen but you will not go wrong if you focus on the right thing which is adding value to the market place.

Everyone wants to monetise their blogs but the big question is how can you do it?

Right now, we will go through 10 amazing ways that you can implement into your blogs right now so that you can start monetising it. My suggestion however is to choose a few monetisation strategies to work on before adding more.

Become An Affiliate Marketer

It is no secret that most of us are not product creators but does that stop us from making money? Well… maybe in the past but not now!

Just think about this, Airbnb do not have any houses yet they are the biggest home renting service, likewise, you do not need a product to start making money off your blog.

Enter affiliate marketing, a strategy where the product creators does all hard work and you act as a middleman to link up your fans to the products.

All you need to do is to integrate Google Adsense into your blog and the system will detect the most relevant ads to display on each individual pages of your blog.

You may be thinking now, why Google Adsense over other advertising platforms? Well, based on my experience, Google’s algorithm is the best; it is able to display the most relevant ads to users.

Can you imagine if you are running a weight loss blog and kitten ads pop up in your website? Will it trigger your readers to click through or just ignore the ad?

Odds are, they will close the ad. That said, I do not integrate ads into my websites because I find them a nuisance.

But I will leave it to you to decide whether you want ads in your blog.

Sell Sponsored Blog posts

A sponsored blog post is also known as a promoted post. 

Typically, you can start selling sponsored blog posts when your blog is popular or when your readership level reach a prominent figure.

Sometimes, companies may knock up your door if they find that the theme of your blog is a good match with the product that they are promoting.

But in most cases, you must knock up their door to ask for a sponsorship. You know the bible’s saying, “ask and you shall receive”, if you do not ask, you will never receive.

Write Paid Reviews

Paid reviews are similar to sponsored blog posts as companies will pay you to direct your readers to their homepage or product pages.

If there is one difference between the two, I will say that it is the style of writing. For instance, in a paid review, you are more likely to have access to a product or service where you will then write your honest review of the item.

Let them tell you what is it that they want so that you can create something to cater to their needs. This way you know that when you launch the membership there will be a take up.

If you already have a business, it would make sense to you to start blogging about your own business as you will never know how it will improve your visibility.

But the two common issue that business owners face are the lack of time and they are clueless what to blog.

To solve the issue of not having enough time, you can either hire someone to help you or work on your time management by dedicating one hour a week for blogging.
